From waste to wealth; Kalpi’s paper industry

Hand-made paper left to dry at Kalpi in Uttar Pradesh.

An old sock here, some stockings there. Hosiery is hunted down in nearby towns to be used in the making of this paper.

The trees meanwhile breathe safe.

Ask not what the fabric of this paper holds. The secret chemical used in making these papers is safely enmeshed, invisible to the outsider’s eye.

Born from the marriage of art and occupation, the paper made here travels as far as Delhi, where it is used to make wedding invitations.

Place: Kalpi, Jalaun, Uttar Pradesh
